Our guest today is one of my favorite authors, Emma Chase!
Hi Emma, thank you very much for joining us once again for Audiobook Lovin’!!
Hi!! So happy to be here with you!
For those that may not know you, why don’t we start by having you tell us a little bit about yourself and how you became an author?
I live in New Jersey with my awesome husband and two energetic children. I write sexy, funny, contemporary romance. My first book, Tangled, is an irreverent rom-com told exclusively from the hero, Drew Evans’s, POV. When it was published in 2013, it was kind of an unexpected hit that landed on the NY Times bestseller list. Since then, I’ve published with Simon & Schuster and independently: the Tangled Series, the Legal Briefs Series, the Royally Series and the upcoming, Getting Schooled. It’s been a wonderful, amazing journey.
I became an “Emma Chase fan” when I listened to “Sustained (The Legal Briefs Series Book 2)”, narrated by Sebastian York (LOVE HIM!)! What made you decide to turn your books into audiobooks?
I’m so glad you enjoyed Sustained – and Sebastian York is fantastic (before I even started writing Sustained, I knew I wanted SY to narrate it)! I love audiobooks. They’re great for multitasking, but more, they offer a new way to experience a story that’s different from reading. They’re audio performances, that bring characters to life in a captivating, beautiful way.
Are you involved in the casting of your audiobooks and if so how do you go about selecting your narrators?
Yes, I’m involved. Sometimes I’ll have a narrator already in mind or, other times, the publisher will send me audio clips from a few narrators and we’ll decide who’s the best fit for the story.
For me, choosing a narrator is about the voice—they have to sound like the character I hear in my head. Comedic timing is important in my stories as well and being able to convey the personality of the characters. I’ve been fortunate to work with some of the most talented narrators in the industry.
LOVE LOVE LOVE the ROYALLY Series (narrated by Shane East & Andi Arndt)! How did these stories come about?
Thank you! The idea for the stories came about when I was on a call, brainstorming with my agent. We were talking about things that readers are interested in when they’re not reading – and when “royalty” was mentioned, it was a magical moment! I had a rush of ideas and themes that I was so excited as a writer to explore. We got off the phone and I had all three Royally books outlined that day.
When it came to the narrators for the Royally Series audiobooks—I was already a big fan of Andi Arndt’s work from the Stage Dive Series (by Kylie Scott). I was very excited to work with her and couldn’t wait to see how she would bring Olivia Hammond to life. I wasn’t familiar with Shane East’s work, but when S&S Audio sent me an audio sample, it was another magical moment—he voiced Nicholas Pembrook perfectly!
Typically, I change the narrators for each book in an interconnected series, as the main characters change. But for the Royally books, it was wonderful to be able to keep the same narrators throughout the series, because—and I think listeners agree—Andi & Shane give amazing performances in every book!
I’m so excited that ROYALLY SCREWED (bk 1 in the Royally Series) has been optioned for a film by Passion Flix! Do you know when it will be releases? What can you share?
Yes, it’s so exciting! And I’m honored to be working with the team at Passionflix—they’re terrific!
Here’s where we are now—we have a Royally Screwed movie script! All our favorite lines and scenes are included and there’s so much heart and charm and humor and sexiness!! It’s going to be an amazing movie! We’ve had some discussions about casting (woohoo!), but that’s still in the early stages. As details are finalized, I will definitely be sharing the news ☺
The next book in the ROYALLY Series is “Royally Yours” releasing on August 14th. Will the audiobook be available on the same date? Are the narrators the same as the previous books?
Yes, the plan is to release the Royally Yours audiobook on August 14th, the same day as ebook and print—and I believe Andi and Shane will be returning to narrate.
What can you tell us about “Royally Yours”?
Royally Yours was an unplanned story. The idea popped into my head one day—and it was one of those ideas that grabs you and says ‘you have to write this right now!’. So, I shifted my schedule around and got to writing! It’s a beautiful, breathtaking story, with lots of sweet, sexy, moments that I have totally fallen in love with. I think readers will love it too.
“Getting Schooled” released in February as an Audible Original. This was an “auto buy” for me and OMG, it did not disappoint!! This story has it all, great storyline, phenomenal characters that make you fall in love with them, humor, sexy time and did I mention great characters? How did you capture the energy and spirit of not only the teachers but also the high school students?
I have a few friends and family members who are teachers, so I have the inside scoop (one of my friends actually taught at our old high school). Also, the town of Lakeside is based on my own hometown. So…basically everything in Getting Schooled is real, lol.
Okay—not exactly real, but a lot of the teaching aspects, the interactions with the students (both funny and heartwarming) were inspired by stories that were told to me and my own high school experiences. We were lucky to have some really great teachers at my high school—they were fun when they could be, and serious when they had to be…and they cared about their students (the dedication for Getting Schooled is: For our teachers. We remember you.).
As for the students’ personalities I draw a lot of inspiration from my own adolescence. Growing up, I had a great group of friends and although we were basically good kids, we got into just enough trouble to keep things interesting. Also, my daughter is in high school, so she was my resource on the students’ lingo—I actually learned some new words in the writing of this novel, lol.
Will we get more stories with the secondary characters?
Yes!!! Dean’s story is up next—it’s planned to release in 2019 and it’s going to be so much fun! Dean is an awesome character, he’s a drummer—funny and a little wild—definitely sexy. But he’s also an AP Math teacher, so he has a very smart, almost nerdy side too. It makes for an interesting dichotomy.
After that, there aren’t any official plans, but there’s definitely potential for future stories (hint, hint: Garrett has one brother who’s a recently divorced/single dad/ER doctor and another brother who’s single, a player and a firefighter. Lots of possibilities! )
Wooohoooo! Totally doing the happy dance!! Can't wait!!! What are you working on next?
I’m working on edits for Royally Yours right now (releases August 2018) and then I’ll be finishing Dirty Charmer—which is the first book The Bodyguards Series, a spin-off series from the Royally books (releases October 2018).
Any upcoming appearances that you’ll be attending where readers can meet you?
In August I’ll be at the Authors in the City Signing in Manhattan and in October I’ll be attending Love N Vegas. Hope to see lots of readers there!
