Meet Vegas - Not Your Average Vampire
Hi Everyone!!
I would like to introduce all of you wonderful readers to Michael ‘Vegas’ Tremayne.
Vegas is one of my main characters and the love interest of my other main character, Dez. The other thing you need to know about Vegas is he’s a vampire.
Wait! Where are you going? Come back! I promise, Vegas is not your standard vampire and I’d like to tell you a little bit about him. If you’re willing to hear me out, you just might find that he’s got something your little bibliophile heart is looking for.
When I originally started writing my Demon Legacy series back in 2005, the book had a MUCH different landscape. The main character, then named Jade, was a human who had fallen for a vampire. And he was a run-of-the-mill vampire by all accounts. Garlic, wooden stakes, and sunlight all making for a really bad day. He was broody and, well, kind of a grump.
That version of the book was shelved in 2006 as life got in the way of my writing aspirations. Over the years, I had made notes in various notebooks when ideas to put into my book popped up, but I never did anything with it. I just kept compiling notes. Over the years, who and what my vampire love interest was changed, as did my leading lady. At one point along that road, I actually took the dreaded red pen to the printed copy of my book, but that was really early along the way, long before the characters in my head started morphing and becoming what they are now.
Fast forward to 2011. Self-publishing was a real thing and I decided to give my little untitled book a shot again. I pulled it out of the dusty box it was trapped in…………..and cried.
The book was soooooooo awful.
I mean, HORRIBLE.
I had spent so long making notes here and there in my note book and watching my characters develop in my head that I forgot what they really were in the beginning. What they had become in my head was totally different. I decided that if I was going to really do this, really make a go at publishing, I was going to have to completely rewrite my book. So I did. What resulted was the first book in my series, The Devil You Know.
That brings me to Vegas.
He’s still a vampire, yes, but he’s not your ordinary vampire that you’re used to in vamp fiction. At better than four hundred years old, he has progressed with time. You won’t catch him prancing around in frilly shirts sportin’ long fingernails like the vamps of Anne Rice’s Vampire Chronicles.
More often than not, he’s either in a button down shirt and nice jeans or a tailored suit. He’s a predator swathed in Armani.
He listens to hard rock and heavy metal one day, classical music the next. And he’s got a major love for his collection of nice cars.
He doesn’t react to garlic, except maybe a moan of satisfaction as he finishes a really good plate of classic spaghetti and meatballs. Yes, my vampires eat food. However, they do need human blood to survive. Thanks to Tempero, a solution created by the witch covens to stave off the blood lust, our guy has the ability to go for months without feeding on a human, but he does eventually have to feed or he gets really weak.
A wooden stake to the chest would hurt like hell, but it wouldn’t kill him. And a cross held up in front of him will do little but make him wonder if you’re a religious fanatic. He loves the warmth of the sun, but he spends most of his time out and about during the cover of darkness, not because he’ll burst into flames or anything messy like that, but because long exposure to the bright light hurts his eyes thanks to his crazy-enhanced eyesight.
He has supernatural strength and is able to do fun things like drop off the rooftop of a building without blinking, his only concern being scuffing his expensive shoes. As long as he feeds, Vegas can do lots of cool things. The Tempero just makes it so he doesn’t lose control and rip out the mail man’s throat.
Oh, and the mail man is fully aware that our boy gets a little long in the tooth on occasion. In my world, vampires do not live in hiding. They live among humans, their existence known to the populous at large, their gold eyes giving up their nature on sight. And if you happen to see those golden-colored eyes glowing, look out. That means he’s either experiencing intense emotion, he wants to do the dirty deed with Dez, or he’s incredibly hungry.
And that intense emotion I mentioned? Yeah, more than likely, it’s anger, and you don’t want to be in his path if Vegas is angry. He spent a good portion of his early vampire years working as a soldier for the covens, and then went on to capitalize on his mad skills by becoming a contract killer. That’s right. Our boy is a hitman for a living, and he’s not afraid to double-tap someone in the head if they cross him the wrong way.
Vegas also has a softer side. He’s madly in love with Dez, and in Speak of the Devil, we really get a good glimpse of that part of him. His consuming emotion for her rules his decisions. He’d do anything for her, and the thought of losing her rips him apart. If he were to lose her, those left behind to deal with Vegas and his inevitable downward spiral might not fare too well. Luckily, Vegas has a great cast of people close to him who will stop of nothing to keep him from going off the rails.
I hope you enjoyed meeting Vegas! He’s near and dear to my heart, and I can’t wait to see where the Demon Legacy road leads him.
