Things Shared

Un-vegetable Holiday Green Beans

Six 14.5 oz cans traditional cut green beans

1 stick of butter

Six strips of thick cut bacon

1 cup of brown sugar

1 tbsp garlic powder

1 tbsp onion powder

Salt and pepper to taste

This is a dish you start first thing in the morning before everybody starts getting up and going on the holiday. It simmers all day. Literally. All day. We make it the day ahead and refrigerate it, then set it up in the crock pot to reheat all day before serving for Thanksgiving/Christmas.

Cut six strips of bacon into one inch pieces. Crisp in a frying pan. Set aside to cool.

Pour six cans of green beans, liquid and all into a large pot. Add butter, brown sugar, garlic and onion powder, salt and pepper. Bring liquid to a boil and reduce heat. Cover and leave to simmer all day. Occasionally stir to prevent sticking. You will have to add 1 cup of water occasionally as the mixture reduces. Stir in bacon about a hour before you plan on serving. When it is no longer green and no longer resembles a vegetable - It’s ready.

(This is a family recipe that evolved from a
McCracken County School Cafeteria recipe.)

HAPPY HOLIDAYS
EVERYONE!!!!!!
